Postgraduate Services

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LUHFT) is the largest teaching hospital in the Cheshire and Mersey area. LUHFT offers training opportunities to a wide variety of doctors in training. This education is supported by a team of educational and clinical supervisors within the clinical setting, who work closely with the trainees to ensure curriculum requirements are met and assessment criteria completed.

The Trust's Postgraduate Medical Education teams are led by Dr Rachel Ellks, Director of Medical Education at the Royal Liverpool & Broadgreen Hospital and by Dr Simon Mercer, the DME at Aintree Hospital. The Foundation Training Programme Directors are Mr Chris Webb & Dr Cecilia Jukka. We have 2 Practice Education Facilitators for Medical Education, Jo Baker and Dawn Bullen. The Directors are supported by a team of Postgraduate Administrators across sites. The team is proactively committed to the development and modernisation of Postgraduate Medical Education in line with local and national recommendations and guidelines.

We support Junior Doctors with a variety of programmes including a comprehensive induction. It is our aim to ensure doctors are equipped with the skills needed to work safely within the trust. In regard to research and education, we are fortunate to have excellent links to nearby Liverpool University and the School of Tropical Medicine, which enhances research and training openings to those who seek them. In the future, we will see the expansion of this with the link to Liverpool Health Partners and the Bio Campus adjacent to the new Royal.

This closeness, both geographically and professionally, means we are able to offer a seamless transition for 5th year medical students into foundation training. The Foundation Academic Programme is well established with firm support from both DME's, the FTPDs and local academic advisers to facilitate research and development opportunities for AFP trainees. Teaching and training is well engrained within the culture of the trust with a number of medical student teaching initiatives currently led by Foundation Doctors.
